STUDIO UPDATE FROM MJR
Spoke to MJR for a while this afternoon, and here's what he had to say:
They had planned to start the mix on the CD this week, but were delayed
a bit overall by the holiday earlier this week, so mixing has been
rescheduled for January. Russ has 3 songs to finish (and was on his way
to The Dungeon as Mike & I spoke) & hopes to be done with his recording
by the weekend, and MJR has a couple more solos that he wants to record,
as well as getting some loose ends tied up and polishing things up
overall. They are still aiming for a Spring '07 release, & Mike had some
pretty exciting things to say about the material, saying that it has
something for old fans and new fans alike, so I'm confident more than
ever in saying that the CD will be well worth the wait.
So there IS light at the end of the tunnel, & the band appreciates your
patience greatly; stay tuned for more info soon!

STUDIO UPDATE FROM MJR
Time for another studio update! Just spoke to MJR & here's the latest:
It seems that this is doomed to be the 'Murphy's law' cd, where anything
that could go wrong, will/has gone wrong. Due to technical problems,
first with the studio computers, and then with the failure and
subsequent replacement/installation of somewhat-hard-to-find parts in
MJR's amps, the band's about 2 weeks behind where they'd hoped to be
progress-wise at this point. This has thrown off the projected date for
getting the cd out and mixed, so they've had to push back the date for
that by about a month in accordance with what dates were available to them.
Currently MJR is getting his guitar parts finished, & after that Mike
LePond will finish up his bass parts, and then Russ will enter the
studio to work on recording the vocals. Mike asked me to extend the
band's appreciation to the fans for their patience, & at this point, is
anticipating a release date after the new year; I have no doubt that it
will be well worth the wait.

STUDIO UPDATE FROM MJR
Just spoke to MJR & here's the latest:
It would appear that one of the early drafts of the cd cover has been
leaked to at least one website; the band hasn't had a chance to okay any
final artwork, so what you see floating around out there is NOT the
final cd cover art.
Jason is done recording his parts, & the rhythm tracks & other guitar
parts should be done by next week. The band's aiming to have the music
ready for mixing by mid September; MJR says that things are moving right
along, & kept our conversation short so that he could get back to it.
More news when there's more to share...

STUDIO UPDATE FROM MJR
Just spoke to MJR & got caught up on things. He reports that they will
start recording in the beginning of July; they're currently finishing up
one song and putting final touches on a couple of others. Mike said that
since writing has taken this long, they've chosen to fine tune the songs
before entering the studio; they've put a lot of time into
pre-production on this one.
More details next month once recording has begun!

European fesitvals cancelled as LePond prepares for surgery
World Management and Symphony X regretfully announce that the European
Festivals for June in Sweden and Spain will unfortunately have to be
cancelled due to severe illness. We hope that Michael LePond’s surgery
will go well, and wish him a speedy and full recovery. We would like to
let all the fans know that we will be back on tour in fall of 2006
around release of the band’s next record.
Please read Post below:
FROM MICHAEL LEPOND -
To whom it may concern,
I have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease (an Inflammatory Bowel
disorder). This has caused an obstruction in my small intestine, making
it impossible to digest solid foods. Currently, I am hospitalized where
they can feed me through an I.V. unit supplemented with a liquid diet.
But, there is some good news. The doctors tell me that with a surgical
procedure, they will have me back to 100% in about 6 weeks, and although
it is a chronic disease, this procedure will make it much easier to
control it's effects in the future.
I want to thank the band, the crew, the fans and everyone else involved
for your understanding and support during this tough time. You will all
make my healing process much easier and I'll be back on the bass in no time.
Michael LePond
Note:
We have set up a mailbox where get well wishes can be sent to Mike..send
your e-mail to getwellmike[at]symphonyx[dot]com and it will be printed out and
sent to him until he's able to access the mailbox himself.

STUDIO UPDATE FROM MJR
This just in from our favorite Symphony X slave Fan Club President...
Just spoke to MJR; he says they have four solid songs that are pretty
much done, and they're working on arrangements for the rest of the
songs. Thngs are really coming together, all the pieces are falling into
place, and Mike says he's 'in the groove'; all very good things to hear.
Mike assures me that this thing is going to kick ass when it's done;
it's going to be well worth the wait, and your patience is greatly
appreciated.

STUDIO UPDATE FROM MJR
Here is an update as to how things are going...
Well, it's November and we have most of the music written, and about
half the lyrics finished. Over the next month, we'll work out the
arrangements and start putting it all together. This one is taking a bit
longer than we expected. There was a lot of 'starting and stopping' with
the writing, (between the tours and other unexpected things happening...
like flooded studios, that kinda crap). So there have been some
monkey-wrenches thrown into our usual way of working.
In the past, it was like this: we'd spend a few weeks talking about some
basic ideas and direction for the music / lyrics - then spend eight
months to a year writing and putting it all together. Things happen
faster that way - you have a goal and direction and you just dedicate
your time to make it happen. This time things were a bit different;
writing for a while - then on the road - then back to writing - and so
on... and inspiration isn't something that you can 'turn on and off', it
comes when it comes. You might work on something one day - and like
where it is heading - but then stop for a month, come back, and find it
difficult to get your mind-set back to the point where you left off.
And, although it sounded like a good idea at the time, the phrase "we
can write songs on the bus" wasn't happening - too many distractions and
other crap going on.
Anyway…to sum it all up, the initial writing process took a little
longer than usual - aside from all that, everything else is cool. Things
are moving at a good pace now and I'm thinking we can start the actual
recording in a month or two.
Once we get to the point where we are tracking – we can get some updates
happening (studio reports, some pics, etc.). I know the ‘natives are
getting restless’ - but for now, there isn’t a whole lot to say… just
tell everyone to hang in there!

ATLANTA SHOW MISSED
Last night, Symphony X was forced to cancel their scheduled perfomance
in Atlanta.
Glenn (The Merchandise Guy) just spoke with Russ on the phone and learned
that Symphony X's bus driver is alive, but is in an Intensive Care Unit due
to Leukemia. The band truly regrets missing the Atlanta show, but their
thoughts and prayers do go out to their bus driver towards getting better.
This is a situation that was beyond the band's control. They did make every
effort to get to the show but the substitute bus driver did not arrive in
time for them to make it happen.
The band was getting ready to go on stage at the time of the phone call, so
that's all the information we have at the moment.

NO SECOND STAGE FOR SAN ANTONIO & CINCINNATI SHOWS
We apologize deeply for any inconvenience this may cause, but we
were just informed today by Megadeth's agency of these changes.
There will be no second stage at either the San Antonio show, or the
newly announced Cincinnati show. So that makes four venues - San
Diego, San Antonio, Cincinnati, and Boston - where there will be no
second stage, and as such, Symphony X won't be appearing at those
shows.

NO SEATTLE, SAN DIEGO, BOSTON SHOWS
Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but there are two items that
need to be made public, which we have just been informed of (or we'd
have announced it much sooner).
~Number one: Toronto will be the last date of the Gigantour that
SymX will be playing; they will not appear at the Seattle date, or
any others that may be scheduled after September 3.
~Number two: We've just been informed that there will not be any
second stage bands appearing at the San Diego or Boston dates, due
to either space or curfew issues. Therefore, Symphony X won't be
appearing at those dates either.
Our apologies to those who'll be affected by these items; we have no
control over these issues, and have done our best to inform you as
soon as we got the info ourselves.

GIGANTOUR CONFIRMED
Symphony X and World Management are happy to announce that the band
have been invited to join the "Gigantour" this summer. The band are
excited and eager to get out on the road in continued support of
their album The Odyssey. Gigantour is a six-week festival trek co-
headlined by MEGADETH and DREAM THEATER. Other main-stage acts
include FEAR FACTORY, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and NEVERMORE. Also
scheduled to appear on the second stage are DRY KILL LOGIC with more
acts to be announced.
Michael Romeo had this to add:
"Originally, our plans for the summer were to finish writing, and
get into the studio to finish the new cd. After we rethought
everything, we came to the conclusion that Gigatour was too cool of
a thing to pass up.
We want to give a big thanks to Dave Mustaine for giving us the
opportunity, and a big thumbs up to Mike Portnoy for putting in a
good word for us. Thanks guys; see you on the road!"
====== 29.APR.05 ======
STUDIO UPDATE
MJR has written almost 2 hours worth of music, & is now taking the time
to find the right song title and lyrical content for each song. Each
song has a certain feel to it, so it's important to make sure the lyrics
reflect that feel. The 'darker' tone that they're aiming for which has
been mentioned in previous studio reports will apply more to the
orchestration and the lyrical content than the vocals, for those who
continue to muse over the likelihood of Russell doing death metal
growls. Much of that dark tone would lend itself to ghostly or horror
themes (they're tossing around such ideas as Paradise Lost, and the
works of Edgar Allan Poe, for example), but MJR says nothing is definite
as far as lyrics go. He's also working on fine tuning the orchestration
for the 'longer song', which also has a darker feel to it; that said, he
wants it to be clear that it will not be 'an epic' like The Odyssey. One
major aim throughout the writing process is making sure that the cd
remains true to the Symphony X style, and kick things up a notch as
well, without it sounding just like music they've done before; "I want
to be excited about the music, so I know the fans will be excited about
it" he said.
More info as it becomes available.

TOUR RUMORS ADDRESSED
Symphony X will NOT be part of the Gigantour; finishing the new cd takes
precedence over going out on tour.

that changes, it will be announced here.

STUDIO UPDATE
They're working at a good pace on writing the new cd, they have parts of
songs put together at this point that are equal to about half of the new
cd, & have lots of ideas that they're working with. They're being very
critical with this cd, wanting to kick it up a notch from The Odyssey &
make it the best stuff yet; thus far they're working with material from
MJR, Pinnella & LePond. Mike sounded really intent on cranking out some
excellent music; he's in 'the writing zone', & only good things come of
it when he's in that mindset.
When informed that some fans feared that Mike's comment in an earlier
studio report about the new cd being 'darker' than The Odyssey would
result in Russ doing death metal growls or the like, Mike said that
wasn't going to happen.
Also, 'the dungeon' (the band's studio) has recently been gutted and
totally revamped & is at its best ever acoustically, which should help
contribute to some excellent sound on the new cd.
More news as it becomes available...
====== 20.DEC.04 ======
STUDIO UPDATE
As Russ' solo cd was taking quite a bit longer than anticipated, & Mike Romeo was anxious to get going full force on the new Symphony X cd, they both agreed that Russ would take his solo effort to another studio to complete the mixing. Russ is looking for a certain sound & said that Mike "made the music sound too good"; Russ should be finishing up the final mix in the following week or so. In the meantime, MJR has begun working in earnest on the new Symphony X cd with help from the other band members; we'll have more information here as it becomes available.
====== 20.DEC.04 ======
FAN CLUB NEWS
MJR has almost finished the additional liner notes to be included in the very first fan club cd; with any luck, it'll be sent to press before the end of the year. Fan club members will be informed of further progress on the cd as it is made; information on membership levels and how to join the fan club can be found at churchofthemachine.com. In addition, Amanda 'MetalChick' Carlson has been added to the CotM staff as Newsletter Editor..welcome, Amanda!
====== 04.NOV.04 ======
STUDIO UPDATE
Due to unforeseen delays, Russ' solo cd is just now in the mixing process;
once it's done (2 weeks max), the band will go from part time writing to
full time writing of the new cd. They're still anticipating a release date
somewhere around spring of 2005; the release date of Russ' solo cd is
currently up in the air.
As for the new material, they're trying to decide what the overall tone for
the cd will be, & are contemplating a darker theme, while staying true to
the SymX sound.

FAN CLUB CD
Church of the Machine, the Official International Symphony X Fan Club, is
preparing to release the band's first ever fan club cd. Available to fan
club members only, the very first fan club cd will consist of demos,
outtakes, and unreleased material. The tracklist will be as follows:
(short description of each in parentheses was provided by MJR)
- Inferno - pre-production
(2002 - Basic demo for the song - very close to the final version.) [note from Jax: Russ' ad libs are funny on this one]
- Odyssey - Sketch for Intro/Main Theme
(2002 - This was the first draft of the intro - some of the orchestral
parts used here appear in the final version - with a few modifications.)
- Eyes of Medusa - original title: Gates of Misery
(1996 - Pre-production with a different chorus and extended solo section. A bit long - but interesting.)
- A Winter's Dream, Part II - Rough Mix with Rod Tyler
(1995 - A few weeks before Russell joined the band, we were still in the studio, tracking for the Damnation CD... Rod had already sang on a few tunes and this was a rough mix from one of the sessions.)
- Disillusioned - first demo
(1993 - One of the very first songs we sent to the Japanese label - very
rough demo.)
- The Star Wars Theme and 'too much free time'
(1999 / 2000? - MJR's arrangment of The Star Wars Suite - for 13 guitars and percussion. Wacky stuff.)
The cd will be sent out to fan club members before the end of the year. More information on Church of the Machine can be found at www.churchofthemachine.com.

"This New Jersey native formed Symphony X in 1994, but the band has more in common with Eighties guitar terrorists like Vinnie Moore and Yngwie Malmsteen. Romeo has nimble fingers and a deft touch and can play complex scales with little effort. However, his music is more than a foundation on which to solo."
